Lot no. 96
IBAN DAYAK, Sarawak, Borneo, Indonesia. The majority of Dayak groups live in communities along navigable rivers in large communal structures built on stilts and known as 'longhouses'. This large iron-wood "Hampatong" figure, collected by Jacques Cortecero along the Baram River in 1970, incorporates the recognisable characteristics of the Iban style, namely a representation of a named ancestor, or protective ancestral spirit, an animal from the local environment, in this case a crocodile held in the hand and a buffalo head on its back, symbolising power. Height: 120 cm. Width: 23 cm. Note: The gullied wood is stained dark grey and brown by lichen and bleached by age. Provenance: Collected in situ in 1970 by Jacques Cortecero on the River Baram.
