IBO, Nigeria. Hardwood, patina of use. Very old "Alusi" altar statue depicting a standing female figure. 1st half of the 20th century. Height: 120 cm. Erosions from time and small chips. Note: "Incarnation of a tutelary divinity "alusi", associated with a river, the earth or a distant ancestor. The alusi are tutelary deities who bring protection, fertility and well-being to the community. The gesture of the palms signifies both generosity and an eagerness to receive offerings in return. Provenance: Acquired from the Carrefour gallery. Attested by Pierre Vérité in 1973.
