NIAS ISLAND (south), Indonesia. Hardwood, glossy dark brown patina. A superb coconut grater collected in 1974 in the village of Bawomataluo by Jacques Cortecero. It is represented in the stylised form of a four-legged animal, with genitals underneath. The raised neck is carved with the figure of an ancestor. The toothed iron rasp that was inserted into the animal's mouth is missing. Length: 50 cm. Width: 35 cm. Litterature: "NIAS", tribal treasures. Cosmic reflections in stone, wood and gold.
