Lot no. 20
NIAS ISLAND (south), village of Bawomataluo, Indonesia.
Exceptional "Balato or balatu sebua" ceremonial sword used by head-choppers, with scabbard. The strong steel blade and wooden "ballatu sebua" handle represent the open mouth of the dragon-snake "Lasara", reinforcing the idea of protection for the owner of the sword. At the back of the hilt is a small, exquisitely carved 'Bekhu' monkey. A ball, charged with magic, made from rattan and warthog teeth, is attached to the scabbard, the whole intended to bring luck and protection to the warrior.
These swords, linked to their owner's rank, are kept in the house's safe and shown at celebrations.
Length: 80 cm.
