NIAS ISLAND, Sumatra, Indonesia. Hardwood inlaid with a deep black patina. Couple of ancestors representing a seated man and woman, their eyes set with shells and both wearing the high gold crown "Takula Ana'a" indicating that the couple belonged to the high nobility. Note the quality of the representation of the child curled up and protected in his mother's arms, carried on his legs. Length: 50 cm. Width: 35 cm. Provenance: Collected in situ in 1974 in the village of Bawomataluo by Jacques Cortecero.
