Lot no. 124
“Immaculate Conception”. Carved, polychromed and gilded wooden sculpture. Colonial School. Peru. 17th century.
Majestic depiction of the Immaculate Virgin, which despite being a New Spanish sculpture, still owes much to Spanish tradition, in particular the imagery from Seville. The Virgin Mary prays on a quarter moon, surrounded by angels and standing on a spectacular plinth on which an angel holds the orb on his back, from which Mary emerges. Imposing carved and gilded wooden plinth that rests on four feet decorated with siren angels and ending in a ball gripped by an eagle claw. This Virgin Mary is very similar to the sculpture of the Virgin Mary to be found at the Archbishop’s Palace Museum in Lima.
92 x 32 cm.
