Lot no. 32
Important binding cover for a evangelary in gilded and chiseled copper with champlevé enamel. Limoges. France. Romanesque. Circa 1210. 23 x 12 cm.  A wonderful example of the creations of the Limousin workshops, which has survived to the present day in splendid condition. Our plaque depicts Christ in Majesty, surrounded by the tetramorph, the symbols of the four evangelists, set in a mandorla on a blue background dotted with polychrome rosettes. He blesses in the Latin style and holds the Holy Scriptures in his left hand. The heads of the symbols of the evangelists and Christ are small figures applied in gilded copper.   Our plaque is practically identical to the one that belongs to the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Angers, France (inventory no. 2003.1.165),  which was part of the exhibition “Medieval Splendors: The Duclaux Collection Revealed,” held at the Museum of Fine Arts in Angers between November 2018 and February 2019.   Reference bibliography:  - https://ow-mba.angers.fr/fr/notice/2003-1-165-la-majeste-du-christ-380b9791-e710-4ca3-8e23-ad0d2e35dbff - GAUTHIER, Marie-Madeleine (dir.), Émaux méridionaux : catalogue international de l’Oeuvre de Limoges.
