Important wax seal with the coat of arms of Gaspard MONGE (1746-1818), count senator of the Empire. Oval, with the coat of arms under a toque girded with the Legion of Honour. Ebony handle. 28 x 22 mm. B.E. First Empire period. Gaspard MONGE. An enthusiastic supporter of the Revolution, he was Minister of the Navy for a few months, organised the powder and cannon foundries and played an active part in the creation and organisation of the École normale and the École polytechnique. Charged with a mission in Italy, he befriended Bonaparte, then took part in the Egyptian campaign and was appointed President of the Institute of Egypt. He was showered with honours by the Empire, including President of the Conservative Senate, but was disgraced by the Restoration. His ashes were transferred to the Panthéon in 1989.
