Important Christ in carved softwood. Head bent over the right shoulder, V-shaped arms with visible vein network, short perizonium held in place by a double cord, returning to the front and falling laterally over the right hip, bent legs and superimposed feet. Flanders, late 17th/early 18th century Height of Christ: 72 cm On a leather background with embossed silver elements in a frame decorated with a frieze of cut foliage. This beautifully executed Christ is very similar to the ivory Christ in the P. Rigaux collection, Antwerp. The latter has been compared to the crucifix in the Rockox House in Antwerp, now impossible to find (see Exhibition Brussels 1977, La sculpture au siècle de Rubens dans les Pays-Bas méridionaux et la principauté de Liège, Musée d'Art ancien, catalogue, fig.311, pp 333-334).
