Similar citymark 945/947, master no.278 with mark 959). Hamburg. Dated 1695. Tobias Fölsch (Völsch), 1690-1707 master. Provenance: The beaker was ever since 1695 in the possession of the families. It represents an extraordinary and impressing work by the renowned Hamburg master Tobias Fölsch, who was famous for his representative works. In 1690 he was commissioned with a "Humpen" for the Hamburg ship carpenters. 1703 he crafted two "Röhrchen", a donation of the Hamburg slate, copper and plummet roof tilers to the stone tiler craftsmen of Frankfurt/Main, today kept in the Historic Museum of Frankfurt. Friedrich von der Borch, colonel constable in service for the Swedish and vice commandant of the City Hamburg, acquired the estate Schönebeck near Bremen on the 29th of April in 1682. The poor condition of the mansion induced extensive renovation, which were finished in 1705; the inscription remembers the measures: ICH FRIEDRICH V. DER BORCH, OBRISTER Z. FUS, HABE DIESE MDCLXXVI VON HOLTZ U. STEIN ERBAUTE U. NACHDEM WEGEN VERFAULUNG DES HOLTZES DEN FALL DREUENDE SEITE ABGE NOMMEN, DAS FUNDAMENT BE VESTIGT U. MIT EINER BRANDT MAUER VERWECHSELT ANNO MDCCV. Also the foundation of the village Friedrichsdorf, today part of the Bremen local district Grohn, traces back to Friedrich von der Borch. In 1665 he got married to Anna Elisabeth von Affeln; the marriage produced three children.
