History: The Monteynard family is a French noble line originating in the Dauphiné, with roots dating back to the 9th century. It probably descends from the Aynards of Domène. The lineage and the name Monteynard were established in the 15th century. The family gave rise to several branches: de Marcieu (extinguished in 1622), de Beaulieu (extinguished around 1634), de la Tour (extinguished in 1652), Eynard, de Leyssaud, de la Pierre (lords then marquises of Montfrin), du Chastelard (extinguished in 1791). Louis François de Monteynard (1713-1791) is one of the most famous members of this family, many of whose writings can be found in our lot. As a young man, he took part in the major wars waged by Louis XV, before being appointed Secretary of State for War under the Duc de Choiseul from 1771 to 1774. His ministry was responsible for the creation of the Cavalry School in Saumur, which became the Cadre Noir. In 1775, he undertook the construction of the Château de Tencin, a place regularly mentioned in correspondence belonging to this lot.
