Important Roll of Honour of the Brasseries de la Méditerranée Marseille - Lyon by Eugène VELTEN comprising : -a knight's medal of the Legion of Honour 1878 -an Officer's medal of the Legion of Honour 1888 -a knight's medal of the Legion of Honour 1922 -a diploma medal of honour Amsterdam 1895 -Several exhibition medals: Hanoi 1887 and 1902, Brussels, Antwerp 1885, Casablanca 1915, Liège 1905, Brussels 1887, Paris 1878, 1900 and 1937, Amsterdam 1883, Barcelona 1888, Marseille 1922, Exposition Universelle de Paris 1889, President of the Jury, Tunis 1887 -Medals as President of the Jury Hors Concours de Marseille 1906 and Member of the Jury Hors Concours Algiers 1889 -Several grand prize medals, diplomas of honour and hors concours awards The set of electroplated medals is contained in a display case made by the Médaillier de Paris probably on the occasion of winning the Grand Prix at the Exposition Coloniale Internationale de Paris in 1931 as indicated on the frame cartouche. H. 113 cm - W. 95 cm Historical background In 1881, Marseille brewer Eugène VELTEN built a brewery in Lyon, in what is now the "Industrie" district, which was to become the largest in France. Initially called Brasserie Eugène VELTEN, then VELTEN S.A. and Société des Nouvelles Brasseries Lyonnaises (SNBL), it merged with Brasserie RINCK (owner of Brasserie GEORGES) in 1966 to form Union des Brasseries Lyonnaises. It finally closed in 1978.
