Important top in pietra dura and marble Florentine manufacture, late 19th century Important large rectangular table top made of refined semi-precious stone inlay, with rich lithic inlay decoration in neo-Renaissance style. The composition is organised around a large central oval reserve in veined red jasper, framed by a geometric band with inserts in lapis lazuli and polychrome semi-precious stones. On either side are two smaller ovals in red jasper, enclosed by elaborate borders with geometric and phytomorphic motifs. The entire field is embellished with a dense ornamental repertoire: rosettes and vegetal whorls, cabochon elements simulating gems, candelabra motifs and architectural cornices of Renaissance inspiration. The outer border presents a rhythmic sequence of alternating circular and octagonal medallions, with the use of green marble, porphyry, alabaster, breccia, lapis lazuli, amethyst and mother-of-pearl in a decorative style clearly of Florentine origin. The overall effect is of great scenographic impact, with a strong chromatic contrast between the dark background and the brilliance of the stones. The artefact is part of the Florentine commesso tradition developed from the 16th century at the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, which was revived with renewed vigour during the 19th century in the Neo-Renaissance context. In terms of quality of execution and decorative layout, the piano can be traced back to Italian production in the second half of the 19th century, destined for aristocratic and upper-class patrons, often made for representative palaces or grand residences.
