INDIAN WATERCOLOUR DEPICTING SHIVA
Provincial Mughal, possibly Bengal, second half of the 18th century AD
A gouache and gold painting on paper mounted on an album page. The composition shows Parvati enthroned on a lotus petal cushion above Shiva within a garden pavilion. Hindu deities are gathered before her and two female attendants are waving fans. A tantric maze occupies the foreground. The verso depicts a study of a cypress tree bordered and undulating floral gilt motifs on an orange background, framed by a plain outer border.
