INDUS VALLEY PAINTED TERRACOTTA JAR WITH TREES AND PEACOCKS
Ca. 2400 - 2000 BC.
A large terracotta jar with a wide, biconical body tapering to a ring foot and a short neck with an everted rim. The upper register of the vessel is painted in black and red slip with four alternating panels framed by vertical bands: two depicting stylised peacocks with radiating tail feathers amidst vegetal scrolls, and two showing abstracted trees with layered branches flanked by dotted roundels. Multiple horizontal bands encircle the shoulder and neck.
