The double sides in order on the album are as follows: 1. Scholar (probably with an ink stone) under the weeping willow, ink painting, signed lower left (大千居士爰), (Daqian Yuan) and the artist’s seal ‘Zhang yin’ (张印), seal lower right (大风堂) 2. Court lady with parrot, ink painting, signed and dated upper left ‘June 1927 Daqian Zhang Yuan wrote in Tuoshui’ (丁卯六月大千张爰写于沱水乡居), artist’s seal ‘Zhang yin’ (张印) and ‘Daqian’ (大千) 3. Scholar (with tea cup?), ink painting, signed and dated upper right ‘June 1927 Daqian Zhang Yuan’ (丁卯六月大千张爰) and the artist’s seal ‘Zhang yin’ (张印) 4. Scholar under a pine tree, ink painting, signed ‘Zhang Yuan from the place Shu, written Daqian’ (蜀人张爰 大千笔), artist’s seal ‘Zhang yin’ (张印) 5. Court lady, ink painting, signed and dated in the style of Yuan-masters, Daqian Yuan’ (仿元人笔法为之 大千居士张爰), artist’s seal ‘Zhang yin’ (张印) and ‘Daqian’ (大千) ZHANG Daqian (1899-1983) Born in China in 1899, ZHANG Daqian or CHANG Dai-chien moved to Tokyo when only 18 years old to learn the art of printing and dyeing textiles. He returned to China two years later and began to study calligraphy, literature and painting in Shanghai. After a short break during which ZHANG turned to Buddhism and became a monk, he returned to painting but kept his monk name Dai-chien. In 1936 he became a professor at the university in Nanjing. He was acquainted with many of the numerous schools of painting existing in China and was also influenced by western art as he spent several years abroad. During those years, it is known that he has met Pablo Picasso and exchanged pieces of art with him. ZHANG was one of China’s most important and best known artists of the 20th century and his paintings fetch record prices at international auctions. Condition: The folding book is in good condition with only a few signs of age and wear. The silk cover is slightly rubbed and small spots are visible here and there. The total size is 43 x 29.5 cm.
