Carcano, Michael de
Sermonarium de peccatis per adventum et per duas quadragesimas. Part 2 (v. 2). Venice, Franz Renner and Nicholas of Frankfurt, 1476. 161 pp. (1. w., without the 1st white leaf) Sign. a2, A10, B-P8, QR10, S8, T10. Got. Typ. 2:75G, 3:150G, in 2 columns of 42 quires. Rubricated throughout, with four- and three-line, partly ornamentally decorated initials and majuscules after chapter and sentence beginnings, as well as paragraph marks, marginalia and underlining in red. 4°. German Renaissance binding, roughened suede on 3 bands over open spine reinforced with pastedowns (partially detached) and wooden boards, with blind embossing on front cover and intact brass clasp with engraving. The front cover divided into diamond fields with fillets of two lines each, both covers with fragments of corner and centre mounts on both covers.

Rare early printing. - GW 06129. - BMC V, 193 - Hain/Copinger 4508 (there both tle. pp. 1-447). - ISTC ic00194000. - Pechellet 3300 - Polain Suppl. 3473 - Goff, p. 194 - ADB, vol. 28 (1889), p. 228 (Renner) and vol. 23 (1886), p. 624 (Nikolaus). - As a preacher, Carcano's work was one of the impetuses for the founding of the "Monte Pieta" banking system in Perugia, a pawnshop that charged little or no interest on loans. - Rare, elegantly set in two narrow columns of Gothic type with wide margins by the two German printers Franz Renner and Nikolaus von Frankfurt, who ran a joint printing press in Venice between 1473 and 1476. - Pre- and post-bound two pastedown leaves: 1st leaf in two parts, trimmed, the two leaves bound back to back. Leaf with text passages of a breviary presumably from the 11th century (cf. BSB, Ms. CLM 29322(14) 1 sp., rubricated at the beginning of the text with 11 red majuscules. With marginalia on Carcano's work, indicating the leaf sign. and with owner's note from Mettlach Abbey, Saarland. - 2nd leaf with text passages rubricated in the running text. 3 1/2 columns. - Binding discoloured, corners and edges bumped, rubbed. Mirror with flaws and stained. Leaf 161 (last leaf, white) only fragmentary. - Leaf 1 with larger cut-outs, but without loss of text. Leaf 160 with loss, recto text loss of 12 lines. - Leaf 2 with shaved old owner's stamp. - Pagination in an old hand. The book block with minor brownish water stains throughout in the fold and in places in the margins and in the cut. Overall a collectible incunabulum.
