With 1 eight-line col. Dragon initial in colour, filled with inner fleuronné and ending in 26-line fleuronné border. Fleuronné border. Rubricated with 9 three-line lombards. Rubricated with 9 three-line lombards, 1 of which with inner fleuronné, as well as numerous paragraph marks and majuscules after sentence beginnings and underlinings in red. (25.5 x 18 cm). Pigskin leather on five bindings over heavy wooden boards, with later hs. With later handwritten title on paper label, rich late Gothic blind embossing with stamps and fillets and brass clasps, mirror from a 16th century parchment manuscript. First edition of Peraldu's popular moral-theological handbook and main work. - GW 12049 - Hain 12383 - BMC III 722, IB 37053 - Goff, P-83 - Pechellet 8979 - Polain 3034 - Proctor 7464 - Vouillième 393 - Of exceptional rarity in the trade, currently no copy offered and only once traceable for us at auction (2015). - The doctrine of virtues by the French Dominican and moral theologian Guillaume Peraldus (c. 1200-71), written around 1249, following a doctrine of vices (c. 1236). Peraldus' handbook quickly became popular and was copied numerous times in the Middle Ages. - Provenance: Owner's inscription in black ink by an old hand on leaf 1r: "Ex Biblioteca Monasterii Brigantinii" (presumably Bregenz or Premberg i. d. Pfalz). - With marginalia and underlining in black ink by an old hand throughout. - Missing pp. 1 (Reg.), 248 ("Explicit tractatus de fortitudine") and 430 ("Tractatus virtutum explicit"), a copy of which is enclosed. - Binding stronger, the book block occasionally worm-eaten, the corners of the wooden boards with small defects. The first few leaves more heavily stained and the binding loosened. Copy with heavy trimming, but without loss of text. Cut slightly spotty. Overall a solid copy, extremely collectible due to its great rarity and the splendid illuminated initials. The first few leaves are more heavily and are partly loosened. Our copy is heavily trimmed, but without loss of text. Edges show traces of fungal spots. Overall, a solid copy, highly collectible due to its great rarity and the magnificently illustrated initial. This lot is taxed.
