Historical background : In the spring of 1947, General de Gaulle created the Rassemblement du peuple français (R. P. F). Resolutely hostile to the Fourth Republic, it advocated strengthening the prerogatives of the executive and a programme favouring a third way between capitalism and communism. After major electoral successes, the party declined and was mothballed in 1955. The General was recalled to power in 1958.
