Lot no. 245
Interesting historical-diplomatic document from the Serenissima Republic of Venice. It is an official document (probably a 'Ducal Commission' or a feudal investiture) drawn up by Doge Silvestro Valier (Doge from 1694 to 1700). The document, written in elegant handwriting on parchment, has a header with capilettera and title in large gold letters: 'SILVESTER VALERIO DEI GRA DUX VENETIARUM ET C.'. The text refers to the legacy of Marquis Filippo Rangoni in recognition of the feud and privileges granted to the noble Rangoni family. Elements of exceptional value: The manuscript bears lead seals attesting to the document's provenance from Doge Silvestro Valier. The lead seals are bound to the manuscript with silk and gold cords. The first seal bears the effigy of Doge Silvestro Valier genuflected before St. Mark. The second seal belongs to Doge Giovanni Cornaro (IOANNES CORNELIO DEI GRA DUX VENETIAR), indicating a confirmation or extension of the deed in a later period (1709-1722). Binding: Magnificent coeval binding in red leather with gold morocco, with central oval mirroring typical of fine Venetian bindings destined for high state offices. Technical details: Age: Late 17th - early 18th century. Subject: Republic of Venice - Rangoni family. Conservation status: More than good. The presence of intact seals with their original cords makes this lot extremely rare on the antiques market.
