Lot no. 287
An interesting and comprehensive 18th-century travel guide entitled 'Nuova descrizione di tutte le città dell'Europa' (New description of all the cities of Europe) by Domenico Boccolari. Printed in Lucca in 1780 by Filippo Maria Benedini, the volume is an indispensable tool for the traveller of the Grand Tour era. The text does not limit itself to a description of the artistic beauties and 'most noteworthy things', but offers an extremely rare practical compendium: Logistics: List of the best inns in each town and road distances expressed in leagues and miles. Economy: Tables of exchange and valuation of Zecchini and other gold and silver coins current in the various states. Services: Postal rates for Italy, Germany, France, Spain and England. Curiosities: A detailed focus on the "Treasure of the Holy House of Loreto" with a list of precious gifts sent by sovereigns and princes. Technical details: Author: Domenico Boccolari. Title: New description of all the cities of Europe. Place and Year: Lucca, 1780. Publisher: Filippo Maria Benedini. Binding: Coeval half leather with marbled plates. On the front plate there is a period paper label with manuscript title within a blue decorated frame. Conservation status: Very good. The binding shows normal signs of use to the margins and spine. Interior well preserved, typical 18th century paper. Historical note: Boccolari's guidebooks were famous for their 'minute' precision. This copy is particularly valuable for the historical reconstruction of European communication routes and monetary systems before the Napoleonic upheavals. The specific mention of inns and postal rates makes it a first-rate document of social history.
