Ippitsusai Bunchō (Japan, 1765-1792)
Print, chuban tate-e, from the series Bokusui hakkei (墨水八景), Eight Views of the Ink Waters, plate Hashiba no yoru no ame (橋塲の夜の雨), Night Rain in Hashiba. Signed Ippitsusai Bunchō ga. Publisher Moriuji. Collector's stamp Henri Vever (on the front) and Louis Gonse (on the reverse). Circa 1768-1772. (Minor restoration).

This series depicts locations along the river Sumida. The 'ink waters' are a pun on the name of the river, the character 'ink' being pronounced 'sumi'.
