Lot no. 37
ISAAC DE MOUCHERON (?)
(Amsterdam, 1667 or 1670 - 1744)
View of Campo Vaccino with the Giacomo della Porta Fountain and artists at work
Oil on canvas, 61X75 cm
Provenance:
Private collection
The painting depicts Campo Vaccino in Rome and in the centre one can see the Fountain designed in 1593 by Giacomo della Porta with a large basin recovered from the Comizio. The large marble Mascherone was sculpted by Bartolomeo Bassi. In the early 19th century, Pope Pius VII Chiaramonti (1800-1823) had the granite basin transferred to Montecavallo and placed under the statues of the Dioscuri. Instead, the mask was transferred to the Port Leonino, where it was placed in the Acqua Lancisiana fountain, remaining there until 1897, when the structure was dismantled for the opening of the Tiber embankment. In 1936, therefore, Muñoz reassembled the two artefacts into a single structure that was placed in a niche along the walls of the Orange Garden.
