Isaac Israëls (1865 Amsterdam - 1934 The Hague) attr;
A pair of dancers before a performance
Painted with a fast, loose, broad style. Israëls was one of the most important Dutch painters of his time and the main representative of Amsterdam Impressionism. He focussed on people as his main subject, although he was also fascinated by the Javanese dancer Raden Mas Jodjana (portrait from 1916 in the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam) or the legendary Mata Hari (portrait from 1916 in the Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo).
