The battle of Alma, watercolor, gouache, black chalk, signed and dated, by I. Pils
Commentary:
The Battle of the Alma, which pitted a Franco-Anglo-Turkish coalition against the Russian armies, was the first major confrontation of the Crimean War. On 20 September 1854, thanks to their tactical and material superiority, the coalition armies, strongly helped by the heroic assault of the Zouaves, gained the upper hand at the end of the day.
Our painting is based on the great work presented at the 1861 Salon.
The frame is slightly missing.
