ISTORIATO PLATE - The Embden Collection
Renaissance, probably Venice, ca. 1600. In the style of Orazio Fortezza (or Horacije Fortezza, Šibenik, ca. 1530–1596).
Brass, chased and richly engraved. Round recessed plate with wide lip and embossed rim. In the center, a blind coat of arms cartouche surrounded by three other cartouches depicting scenes of war (sea battle, infantry, and cavalry). Surrounded by lush acanthus leaf scrolls, grotesque figures, and leaf masks. The wall is engraved in the style of a stylized wreath with a decorative ribbon. The lip features three cartouches with scenes from the story of Moses (worship of the golden calf, parting of the sea, Moses striking water from the rock), surrounded by foliate scrolls and grotesque figures.
Ø 50 cm.
Repair to the lip. Signs of wear and some dents.
Provenance:
The Arlette and Antony Embden Collection, France.
The structure of the well is vaguely reminiscent of a plate by Orazzio Fortezza bearing the family coat of arms of Gauro (?) from the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence (Inv. No. 354C).
We would like to thank Prof. Dr. Milan Pelc for his assistance in cataloguing this object on the basis of photographs (Zurich, 25 August 2025).
