Itō Shinsui (Japan, 1898-1972)
Print, aiban yoko-e, Tamagahara no yū (多摩川原の夕), Evening by the river Tama. Signed lower left Shinsui. Publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō and stamp. Dated 2nd month of Taisho 6 (1917).
Size 22 x 32.6 cm
Although Shinsui's interest was mainly in portraits of women, he also made prints and landscape paintings. He described this landscape as "a scene of solitude, created by the twilight of winter". A peasant walks alone towards his farm, carrying a basket containing his harvest on his back.
