Italy, early 18th century The Roman god Mars Marble bust The god wearing a moustache, a helmet with a grotesque mask head and a plume, his shoulders draped, his right shoulder with a lion mask; resting on a flared marble base. H. 92 cm (36 ¼ in.) l. 64 cm (25 ¼ in.) Provenance: Former collection of the Duke of Aveyro "El Retiro", Churriana, Málaga, Spain ; Bonhams London sale, 18 December 2020, lot 88 (£27,750); Acquired by the current owner. A carved marble bust depicting Roman god Mars, Italian, early 18th century El Retiro, Inventory, 6 May 1966, list in the main staircase, No. 92 'A warrior with a cuirass and helmet and a mask on his shoulder', which is probably the bust of Mars.
