Italian or Flemish Baroque sculptor (probably active at the end of the 17th century) Minerva (or Athena) with a lion White marble. Minerva standing on an oval plinth in strong contrapposto in front of a stele as the goddess of strategic warfare in armour with helmet, a long, wide, softly falling cloak around her figure, a resting lion at her feet as an unusual attribute. A full-bodied sculpture composed for display with subtly smoothed surfaces. Slightly dam.; Approx. 46.5 cm x 25 cm x 14 cm. Provenance: Dissolution of an important German private collection - part II. Italian or Flemish sculptor active probably late 17th century. White marble sculpture of the goddess Minerva (or Athena) with a lion. Minor flaws.
