Jacob de Backer was a painter of religious compositions, also known for his allegories. His life is described in The Book of Flemish, Dutch and German Painters by Karel van Mander. It states that Jacob de Backer was a pupil of Anthonie van Palerme, a painter and art dealer, and later of Hendrick van Steenwyck the Elder. His style reveals an assimilation of Italian mannerism and Flemish artistic traditions, close to that of his contemporaries Frans Floris, Ambrosius Francken, Crispin van den Broeck and Martin de Vos.
