Jacob van der ULFT (Gorinchem, 1621 - Noordwijk, 1689)
An ancient triumph
Watercolour and gouache
32.5 x 50.5 cm
Like many Dutch artists, Jacob van der Ulft was attracted by the light and relief of the South, but we cannot state with certainty that he crossed the Alps to Italy. Numerous sketches and brown ink washes
lead us to believe that he made this journey, following in the footsteps of Jan Both, Nicolas Berchem, Karel Dujardin and Jan Asselyn. Renowned for his work as a painter on glass, of which almost nothing remains, he used majestic classical architecture, always inspired by Italy, as the setting for his scenes, sometimes taken from classical history, sometimes simply anecdotal. Our solemn triumph reflects the artist's imagination: are the fawns introducing the march, the trumpeters, the obelisks and the palatial decor the direct result of long observations of Roman remains, or are they the fruit of an imagination drawn from collections of prints? Our work can be compared with a similar composition that recently came up for sale1.
