Jacques-Bénigne BOSSUET (1627-1704). Autograph corrections on an autograph paper by the Dauphin 8 pages in-4. Assignment of the Grand Dauphin on Saint Louis corrected by Bossuet. Bossuet was appointed tutor to the Dauphin Louis de France (1661-1711), son of Louis XIV, on 5 September 1670, when his pupil was nine years old. This manuscript, in 2 bifeuillets numbered 24 and 25, is taken from an assignment on the reign of Saint Louis, and deals in particular with the King's advice to his sons, notably on the love of God, piety, the King's attitude towards his subjects, etc. It is the work of several days. The large handwriting of the Dauphin covers the eight pages, with erasures and repetitions: "We have already said how much he loved justice, we were not afraid to come and ask him for it, even while he was out walking"... Etc. Bossuet intervened on numerous occasions to correct the spelling and style of his pupil. Thus he corrects "S'il craignoit d'avoir du bien qui fust aux autres" into "avoit quelque chose du bien dautruy"; concerning the teachings given to his son Philippe, Bossuet develops the word "pratique", and writes: "pratique avec toute la autorité paternelle"... One joined an autograph manuscript of Bossuet (2 pages small in-4), notes on the medieval history, mainly in Latin, probably in view of his Discourse on the universal history.
