Jacques CAZOTTE (1720-1792). L.A.S., Pierry par Épernay 9 September 1761, to a Duke 3 pages in-4. Recommendation from his father-in-law for Martinique.
He asks for his benevolence... "you have entrusted the Intendant of this colony with the treasury of the troops sent to Martinique, no doubt because you thought that in a country where you knew no one, the King's man was the one who best deserved your trust. Today I have learned beyond any doubt that this choice, although very wise, was subject to inconvenience and caused problems. [...] perhaps you would be very happy to remedy the real or suspected disorders by a change which would be all the less extraordinary in that it is not usual for an Intendant, who is the authoriser of funds, to remain at the same time the accountant, and this is a breach of the rule which only the necessity of the times can force until measures can be taken which fall within the authorised forms". He recommended as treasurer Mr Roignan, "Lieutnt of the Jurisdiction of Fort Roïal and government counsel for matters of justice. He is my father-in-law [...] He is the most gallant man in the Colonies, whose honest fortune is more than sufficient to be responsible for the deposit that would be entrusted to him and I would be his guarantor here"...
