Jacques Samuel BERNARD (Paris, 1615 - 1687 ) Composition with a bouquet of poppies, roses, martagon lilies and marigolds on a marble entablature Oil on canvas (Restorations) Composition with bouquet of poppies, roses, martagon lilies, and marigolds on a marble entablature, oil on canvas, by J. S. Bernard 30.51 x 25.19 in. 77.5 x 64 cm A founding member and teacher of the Académie, Samuel Bernard belonged to the still life painters of the Faubourg Saint-Germain who were active until the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. At the time, the Protestant milieu was concentrated in this district outside the walls, where it enjoyed a privileged tax status and was influenced by the schools of the North because of the Huguenot community's links with the Reformed countries, the presence of Flemish painters such as Pieter van Boucle and the Saint-Germain fair, where Flemish and Dutch paintings were sold. Protestant painters such as Samuel Bernard, Louyse Moillon and François Garnier were among the first French still-life painters. Here, Samuel Bernard presents a delicate composition in which the richness of the hard stone vase is matched only by the subtlety of each of the flowers. A notice from Mrs Claudia Salvi, dated 12 May 2025, may be given to the buyer. Jacques Samuel BERNARD (Paris, 1615 - 1687 ) 77.5 x 64 cm
