After studying painting at the Warsaw Academy of Art, the Polish painter, illustrator and caricaturist Franciszek Kostrzewski specialised in depictions of Polish rural life and achieved national fame with his genre paintings and satirical drawings. His style was strongly influenced by Romanticism and Realism, and he used detailed compositions to vividly depict everyday scenes. The present sheet, for example, shows the climax of a hunt in a snow-covered forest. The figures depicted in a moment of great movement look like character studies and thus point to the artist's preoccupation with a typology of Polish society. - Some larger losses with traces of restoration.
