Turn of the century Klinger, Max 12 aquatint etchings. In: Intermezzi componirt, radirt und Herrn Kupferstecher und Kunsthändler Hermann Sagert dankbarst zugeeignet. Wheel. Op. IV. 12 compositions. Nuremberg, Stroefer, (1881). Each aquatint etching on China, rolled onto copperplate paper. Various. Sheet sizes, from 45.2 x 37.4 cm to 59.5 x 44.5 cm. - Each sheet numbered in Roman numerals in the lower right margin and inscribed "Max Klinger" on the left. The first and last plate signed and dated in the plate. Singer 52 II - 63 II. - "The cycle of twelve sheets ("Intermezzi") consists of the two self-contained complexes of the Centaur Legend and the Life of Simplicius, each with two loosely connected endpapers and final drawings" (Winkler, p. 82), of which the last sheet forms a highly symbolically charged finale. "It is a satirical race of three human plagues. Love, which is not endowed with very pleasant traits here, rushes ahead, but right behind it comes the even worse torment, death, and this too is only slightly ahead of the afterlife. The master seems to mock its horrors" (Singer, p. 24). - Without the original portfolio. - Some of the sheets trimmed, minimal browning due to the paper, some foxing throughout (motifs mostly unaffected), each with traces of previous mounting in the margins, some creases in the corners, vols.
