Lot no. 126
JALABERT (François). Vue du Prieuré et de la vallée de Chamouni du côté du glacier des Bois Genève, 1777. Watercolour line engraving, 24 x 39.5 cm, sheet. This is probably the first realistic view of the Chamonix valley, drawn by François Jalabert in 1771 and engraved by Geissler in 1777.
A very rare and fine print.
François Jalabert (Geneva 1740 - London 1798) was a Swiss draughtsman who accompanied Saussure on his travels and produced a number of drawings on this occasion, some of which, like this one, taken from Saussure's cabinet, were subsequently engraved.
