James ENSOR (1860-1949). Surroundings of. Family souvenir. "Alexandrine" Black ceramic cat with sulphur eyes and yellow ribbon painted with Alexandrine's first name. Height: 29.5 cm. According to family tradition, James Ensor gave this cat to his niece Alexandrine. Attached are two postcard letters between Alexandrine and Marie Thérèse in 1965, as well as a photo of Alexandrine in Ostend in 1959 and an old postcard. Provenance: A series of four lithographs and an "Ensorien" souvenir from a private Belgian collection close to the painter. Origin: Alexandrine Daveluy (1924-2006), niece of the painter James Ensor, daughter of Mitche Ensor, wife of a Chinese diplomat. -Private collection of Mrs Marie Thérèse Van Den Weghe, a close friend of Alexandrine. The friendship between Alexandrine and Marie Thérèse originated in the friendly relationship between James Ensor and Maurice van den Weghe (1896-1969), a prominent Ostend citizen. It has been in the family ever since.
A certificate of provenance signed by the current owner, a descendant of the Van den Weghe family, close to James Ensor, will be given to the buyer.
