Jamini Roy, "Untitled", Tempera on Woven Bamboo Mat (1887-1972). This tempera painting on woven bamboo mat features bold black linear strokes forming a serene composition. The subject, a mother tenderly cradling her child, exudes simplicity and warmth, capturing the essence of Roy’s folk-inspired aesthetic. Executed in earthy tones, the work reflects his deep admiration for Bengali folk traditions and indigenous craftsmanship. Signed in Bengali at the lower right. Jamini Roy (1887–1972) was one of India’s most celebrated modern artists, known for his distinctive style that blended traditional folk art with modernist sensibilities. Born in Bengal, Roy was initially trained in Western academic painting at the Government College of Art, Calcutta, but later rejected this approach in favor of indigenous artistic traditions. Drawing inspiration from Kalighat pat paintings and rural Bengali folk art, his works are characterized by bold lines, flat colors, and simplified yet expressive forms. He often depicted themes from Hindu mythology, rural life, and everyday scenes, using natural pigments and materials such as woven mats instead of canvas. His unique visual language not only revitalized Indian folk traditions but also positioned him as a pioneer of modern Indian art. Today, Jamini Roy's works are highly revered and remain a cornerstone of India's artistic heritage. Approximately 53.5 x 36.3cm Provenance: From a distinguished collector based in the United States.
