Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568 Brussels - 1625 Antwerp) attr; Study with figures, horses and carts Detailed study sheet executed with a confident hand, depicting numerous figures, some riding horses and loaded with baskets of goods, and a cart. The focus seems to have been placed on the movement, the gait or trot (horses). The overall style of the work is demonstrably similar to comparable works by Jan Brueghel the Elder; analogous subjects and compositions can be found in the collections of the Albertina in Vienna (inv. no. 8423), the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge (inv. no. PD.208-1963) and the Städel Museum in Frankfurt am Main (inv. no. 3781). However, the motifs depicted can also be found in numerous paintings by Jan Brueghel the Elder, including "Roadside Chapel on a Hill" (Wvz. Ertz 2008-10, no. 32) and "Woodland Road near a Village" (Wvz. Ertz 2008-10, no. 53). Pen-and-ink drawing in brown/paper (WZ: coat of arms). Inscribed "25" in pencil lower left.
