Lot no. 3025
JAN BRUEGHEL the Elder, successor of the 17th cent. (Brussels 1568-1625 Antwerp) River landscape with moated castle, in the background the discovery of Moses. Oil on copper. 20.2 × 28.9 cm. Provenance: Swiss private ownership, for several generations. The painting offered here is probably by a 17th century northern successor of Jan Brueghel the Elder, as the Dutch flag on the boat in the foreground suggests. What is remarkable about this painting on copper is the finely elaborated plant life and the wealth of detail in the architecture, the brilliance of the colours of which is particularly emphasised by the precious support. Despite their miniature-like size, the various staffages of figures are painted with great individuality and detail. Dr Luuk Pijl points out on the basis of a photograph that it can be compared stylistically with works by Mattheus Molanus (1591-1645) or could possibly be by Christoffel van der Berghe (1590-1645), for which we thank him.
