Lot no. 3029
JAN BRUEGHEL the Younger (1601 Antwerp 1678) Farmhouses by a stream. Oil on copper. 18.5 × 25.8 cm. Expertise: Dr Klaus Ertz, 12.9.1995 (copy available). Provenance: - Private collection, Germany. - Auction Koller, Zurich, 18 March 2008, lot 3045. - European private collection. After examining the original, Dr Klaus Ertz identified this atmospheric brook landscape with farmhouses as an autograph work by Jan Brueghel the Younger and dated it to around 1630. The radiant colour palette, the light falling from the top right and reflected in the water and the richly detailed birds and figures underline the high-quality execution of the painting on offer here. Jan Brueghel the Younger, who took over his father Jan the Elder's studio after his death (1568-1625), initially continued to work in his unmistakable style and in the 1630s developed a broader, more painterly style, such as in the "Dorfgracht mit einspännigem Fuhrwerk" from the National Museum in Stockholm (inv. no. 678, see Klaus Err.No. 678, see Klaus Ertz: Jan Brueghel the Younger (1601-1678), Freren 1984, cat. no. 40, ft. 9), which, like the painting offered here, was painted around 1630.
