Das aus einer deutschen Privatsammlung stammende kleine Seestück ist ein bisher nicht bekanntes Werk von Jan Brueghel d. J., das Klaus Ertz im Original begutachtet und in das Oeuvre des Meisters hinzugenommen hat. Die Komposition geht, wie häufig bei diesem Maler, zurück auf eine Zeichnung seines Vaters Jan Brueghel d. Ä. (Cabinet des Dessins du Louvre, siehe F. Lugt: Inventaire Général de Dessins de Ècoles du Nord. École flamande, I, 1949, S. 36, Nr. 483, Abb. XXXVIII). This small seascape from a private collection has been identified as a previously unknown work by Jan Brueghel the Younger, which Klaus Ertz has included in the painter's oeuvre after examining the painting first hand. As with many paintings by this artist, the composition is based on a drawing by his father Jan Brueghel the Elder (Cabinet des Dessins du Louvre, cf. F. Lugt: Inventaire Général de Dessins de Ècoles du Nord. École flamande, I, 1949, p. 36, no. 483, illus. XXXVIII), however, the buildings in this version differ slightly.
