A MONUMENT TO ALL ARTISTS A man in contemporary clothes stands on a ladder. Both arms self-consciously stretched out towards the sky. Shimmering in the sun like a modern idol, his eyes fixed on the ruler between his hands. His upward stance is in contrast with the explicit horizontality of the instrument he is holding and with which he tries to measure the clouds in the sky. “The man who measures the clouds” is both a self-portrait by Fabre and a tribute to his deceased brother Emile. The bronze figure seems identical to the artist, but the face was modeled after his brother. A subtle balance through which brotherly love resonates. The story behind the sculpture begins when Jan Fabre sees the film “Birdman of Alcatraz”. Robert Stroud, an inmate in the notorious prison, declares on his release that from this moment on he "will measure the clouds". Fabre saw this as a "metaphor of the artist who tries to capture the impossible in his work". By extension, it depicts the impotence of man in his efforts to control the world. Behind the ruler, the clouds keep passing by. The statue was originally intended to stand on the edge of a roof. The image of the artist on the highest step of the ladder seems ready to fall. The exalted stance and golden glow suggest grandeur, but he still stays in the danger zone. In Fabre's own words, the sculpture thus becomes “a monument to all artists and their aspirations, which is so far apart from the everyday worries, and yet is indispensable to the community'.
