Jan Frans van BLOEMEN, known as the ORIZZONTE (Antwerp, 1662 - Rome, 1749) Two classical landscapes of the Roman countryside with animated figures Pair of oils on canvas (Minor lifting and loss of material on one) Two classic landscapes of the Roman countryside with figures, oils on canvases, a pair, by J. F. van Bloemen called l'Orizzonte 12.79 x 17.32 in. 32.5 x 44 cm Originally from Antwerp, Jan Frans van Bloemen lived in Paris and then Lyon, where he was a pupil of Adriaen van der Cabel, who had moved there on his return from Rome. Their paths crossed, as van Bloemen went to Rome in 1689 to join his brother Pieter, known as Standart, who had built up a solid reputation as a horse painter there over the previous fifteen years. The last of the siblings, Norbert, joined them a year later. While Norbert and Pieter van Bloemen returned to Antwerp, Jan Frans spent the rest of his life there, dying at the ripe old age of 89. Specialising in idyllic classical landscapes in the manner of Gaspard Dughet, his ever-distant perspectives earned him the nickname Orizzonte.
