F. van Dael 12.60 x 9.84 in. 32.5 x 25 cm Provenance: Anonymous sale; Paris, Hôtel Drouot, Mes Blanchet et Joron-Derem, 1 March 2001, no. 10 ; Acquired at this sale by the current owners Originally from Antwerp, Jan Frans van Dael moved to Paris in 1786 where he began a career as a decorative painter for the châteaux of Saint-Cloud, Bellevue and Chantilly. There he met Gerard van Spaendonck, who no doubt encouraged him to specialise in painting flowers and fruit. He entered the Salon in 1793 and exhibited there for 40 years. A prolific artist, Van Dael had a brilliant career in Paris. He died there in 1840 and is buried in the Père Lachaise cemetery, close to Gerard van Spaendonck, who had been buried there since 1822. Jan Frans van Dael's bouquets were part of the perfect Flemish tradition, of which he was the devoted and admiring heir, as shown by the works in his personal collection: Jan van Huysum, Abraham Mignon, Jan Davidsz de Heem and Rachel Ruysch. In response to the growing demand for his paintings, Jan Frans van Dael made replicas of his most sought-after compositions. Pierre de Ronsard's bouquets of fleshy roses placed on a veined brown marble entablature were depicted by the artist on several occasions and in different formats. These are, for example, depicted with the same splendour on another work by Van Dael that went on sale in 20041. Many of his pupils and emulators were inspired by his works, as demonstrated by Antoine Chazal's reworking of our composition2. 1.
