A Dutch painter and draughtsman active in Utrecht, he was a representative of Dutch Romanticism, in vogue in the first half of the 19th century. He painted portraits of his family and friends, genre scenes and landscapes, but also gained renown as an architectural painter.
Today, only the convent remains. The church, built in the 14th century in the Scaldian Gothic style, was demolished around 1860.
