JAN HENDRIK VERHEYEN (Utrecht, 1778, 1846) VIEW OF THE CHURCH AND CONVENT OF THE DOMINICANS IN GHENT, BELGIUM Panel Signed lower right "J. H. Verheijen". Inscribed on the reverse "View of the church and part of the Dominican convent in Ghent / Flanders". Old restorations View of the Church in Ghent, Belgium, panel, signed lower right, with restorations 36 x 42 CM - 14,2 x 16,5 IN. A Dutch painter and draughtsman active in Utrecht, he was a representative of Dutch Romanticism, in vogue in the first half of the 19th century. He painted portraits of his family and friends, genre scenes and landscapes, but also gained renown as an architectural painter. Today, only the convent remains. The church, built in the 14th century in the Scaldian Gothic style, was demolished around 1860.
