Jan II Brueghel (1601-1678), Wooded landscape with resting walkers Jan Brueghel the Younger was one of the major figures of 17th-century Flemish painting. The heir to an illustrious name, he asserted a strong artistic identity very early on, combining technical rigour, a taste for detail and a sense of narrative. He played an active part in the development and dissemination of Flemish landscape painting, while establishing himself as an independent creator within the Antwerp school. His work bears witness to a perfect mastery of the medium and a remarkable ability to combine his family heritage with his own sensibility. Dated from the late 1620s, Wooded Landscape with Resting Walkers is part of the painter's first phase of maturity. The work reflects a perfect understanding of landscape composition, structured according to the progressive depth typical of the Flemish tradition, but enlivened here by a freer, more expressive brushstroke. The presence of the walkers, subtly integrated into the lush landscape, invites a contemplative yet lively reading of the scene. The copper support, prized by Flemish painters for its smooth surface and ability to render the finest details, allowed Brueghel to display his virtuosity in rendering foliage, plant textures and the play of light. This work stands out for the exceptional quality of its execution, its freshness of conservation and the harmony that emerges between nature and human figures. With its formal balance, technical precision and narrative richness, this painting is a rare and remarkable example of the art of Jan Brueghel the Younger in the 1620s, fully testifying to his central role in the development of Flemish landscape painting and his ability to establish his name beyond his legacy as an accomplished master of his century.
