He held various positions in the famous Leiden Guild, of which he was the dean in 1669. As a painter, Jan van der Stoffe specialised mainly in knights' combats and hunting scenes in the style of Palamedes Palamedesz and Esaias van der Velde. The present painting is an example of his art. Comparisons can be made with the panels similar in subject matter and size that were exhibited at Sotheby's in London on 16 December 1999, lot 396, the one registered by the RKD and finally the panel published by Sestieri and mentioned in the bibliography.
