Jan Jacobsz van der Stoffe obtained the title 'master' in 1644. He held various positions in the famous Leiden Guild, of which he was the dean in 1669. As a painter, Jan van der Stoffe specialised mainly in knightly fights and hunting scenes in the style of Palamedes Palamedesz and Esaias van der Velde. The present painting is a fine example of his art. Comparisons can be made with the panels similar in subject and size that were sold at Sotheby's in London on 16 December 1999, lot 396, the one registered by the RKD and finally the panel published by Sestieri mentioned in the bibliography.
The work is accompanied by a critical card by Raffaella Colace.
